In late-1970s Yopougon, Abidjan, serious 19-year-old Aya dreams of studying medicine while her friends navigate romance, pregnancy, family pressure and urban youth life. Adapted from Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie’s graphic novels, the film is valuable for Unga because it gives animated form to everyday Ivorian neighbourhood culture rather than myth alone.
