Inspired by the life of Phiona Mutesi, the film follows a child living in Kampala's Katwe neighborhood who discovers chess through Robert Katende. While her family struggles to survive, training and competition offer Phiona a path toward opportunity and independence. The story foregrounds Kampala, female perseverance and Ugandan sporting intelligence.
